Amy - I'll dig out the thyroid panel description from the test results my Functional Medicine MD orders that show the lab ranges... meanwhile... following is a writeup from that lab (Genova Diagnostics ).... While the TSH range guidelines were changed in 2003, some labs and often doctors still stick with the acceptable higher number which then allows for many hypothyroid patients to go unby Jackie - AFIBBERS FORUM
Amy - what's "normal" on your tests. Can you list your test results? Often all that's done is a TSH and even that range is not narrow enough to catch something brewing. I'll respond later to your other comments on hormones and especially stress...which was also my trigger as well. Jackieby Jackie - AFIBBERS FORUM
Amy - The thallium content in kale is just one consideration. Also, kale is in the brassica family (called goitrogens) and are known to interfere with thyroid function....and influence arrhythmia, as well. Not in everyone, but for many. Light cooking of brassicas lessens that property. So that's another consideration. Kale has a high affinity to accumulate thallium.... but the thaby Jackie - AFIBBERS FORUM
Amyorca - Glad you don't often eat Panda Express foods... Now that you've elaborated a bit on your typical diet... if you use a lot of kale... be aware of this report on thallium toxicity and Kale consumption and the arrhythmia connection. Many people eat kale and don't have arrhythmia, but it's always good to know what's being reported. And in addition to the thallby Jackie - AFIBBERS FORUM
Hello and welcome… That’s unfortunate, but typically, when there is such a rapid connection to food intake and afib, it’s often found to be either the high sodium content of the meal or some flavor enhancers such as MSG that are routinely found in prepared foods. The extra sodium, especially, if your intracellular levels of potassium are already low is virtually a guaranteed trigger for someby Jackie - AFIBBERS FORUM
Hi Barry! - So great to see your post and know you continue to do so very well. I love the alkalizing program you are on and definitely feel it is to everyone's advantage to be mindful of the importance of all that you mention. It's certainly working for you (as advertised). Thanks for letting us know. Best to you, Jackieby Jackie - AFIBBERS FORUM
Sally - I'll try to find some of the reports I have read about the necessity to fix adrenal function first before working on thyroid issues. It makes sense. Send me a PM if you want information on the type of nutrients I used to healthy up the adrenals. I'm glad you are using the Nature-Throid... it is said to be the best option since Armour changed formulations several yearsby Jackie - AFIBBERS FORUM
Hi Shannon - So sorry to read this story. I'm strongly suspicious of the thyroid involvement. As I mentioned to you, my FM MD had me go off Armour thyroid when I had the second ablation as she said that people around and over 70 seem to have arrhythmia problems and she didn't want to be responsible for contributing to mine. Now I'm stuck looking for a safe alternative andby Jackie - AFIBBERS FORUM
Thanks, George. I agree that it is about insulin control and as mentioned, many people have plenty of insulin produced, they just can't get it working properly... ie, insulin resistance. Ron Rosedale talks about both insulin resistance and leptin resistance in this report: He says: Leptin Resistance Leptin resistance causes an increase in visceral fat. This smothers your liver frby Jackie - AFIBBERS FORUM
George - Can you direct Castaway to reports on reversing insulin resistance as that's a typical problem with stubborn weight gain? Until that pattern is reversed, nothing works. Ron Rosedale's report on Insulin Resistance is classic and his reference to the Leptin problem, but thought perhaps Dr. Gundry has some recent reports on the topic as well. Also, Castaway... consider goiby Jackie - AFIBBERS FORUM
Hello Sally - I'm sorry you are still struggling. This would appear to be related to thyroid and adrenal issues which result from stress issues over time. It's always emphasized that it's important to address and correct adrenal dysfunction before doing too much with thyroid because often, not doing so causes problems. I checked back to your earlier posts and Shannon's reby Jackie - AFIBBERS FORUM
Mark - organic makes sense when you consider that coffee beans are the most highly pesticided crop... and all imports to the US are additionally fumigated as well at the border. However, caffeine is well known to be a stimulant and causes excess production of cortisol (the stress hormone)... which is typically troublesome when one also has arrhythmia. thanh - since you mention the symptoms of indigestion and acid reflux, you might consider also trying DGL between meals and a digestive enzyme with meals. DGL is fast acting for reflux and bloat any time it crops up. The directions say to use it 20 minutes before a meal, but I prefer to use the digestive enzyme which is a complex blend. Here are some thoughts: Questions... When you say 'digestive system has never been the same'.... do you mean stomach/digestive issues or the intestinal/bowel issues... or both ? By any chance, were you given an antibiotic around the time of your ablation? Consider using a high count probiotic to help normalize the 'friendly' gut bacteria that must be present forby Jackie - AFIBBERS FORUM
Hi Gill - I believe Shannon posted something to the effect that overall performance/efficacy was found to be better with Eliquis. As George mentions, since there is no antidote yet, it seems logical and better to have a 'lesser' dose taken twice a day rather than one larger dose that lasts 24 hours. I've been on Eliquis for a couple years and fortunately had the doseby Jackie - AFIBBERS FORUM
Hi Jeff - I wish there were a reliable, definitive answer to your question about riding it out but because we are all unique in heritage, habits, nutritional status, environment and so forth, we can only give guidelines that have been useful to the many of the afibbers who have been able to make noticeable and effective improvements. Anti-Fib - I was listening to a webinar on insulin resistance and the presenting physician mentioned that in an arrhythmia patient she was helping to increase magnesium levels with some difficulty, she found applying the Mg gel to the bottom of the feet worked quickly and efficiently.... so much so that the nephrologist who was also treating the patient asked that she just continue on with the oby Jackie - AFIBBERS FORUM
Anti-Fib - The topical/transdermal delivery from either the Epsom Salts soaks or "oils" work well. It just takes the time to do it. The foot soaks are efficient since the surface of the feet have the largest pores and that facilitates rapid and - efficient absorption. The transdermal oils or gel work to relax muscles in about 15 minutes so that offers proof that the delivery is quiby Jackie - AFIBBERS FORUM
Welcome Fibbin –Sorry you have to visit this website, but you’ve certainly come to the right place. At least the ER caught your low potassium and restoring your levels put you back in NSR. Hi Mark - Excellent that your nephrologist is okay with adding those electrolytes since it can certainly make a difference with your heart... plus overall. That's great! In my response, I should have also added that it's extremely important to have a focus on preventing inflammation.... as measured by high sensitivity C-Reactive Protein testing. Hello MarkF786... As you have indicated, with your kidney problem, you are mindful of sodium and potassium intake... and I would assume you have also been cautioned about limited protein intake as well so as not to overburden the kidneys. If you continue to do as you are, using small amounts of potassium to help balance out sodium, it should definitely be beneficial for the AF situation asby Jackie - AFIBBERS FORUM
Nick – on the copper topic… I’ve read that as well about Alzheimer’s. Eye health nutrients often recommended by ophthalmologists to maintain eye health stability in those 50 and over, typically include a small amount of copper and always include zinc to help balance that out. Uncle Albert - Welcome. It's not uncommon to have the prep for colonoscopy cause Afib. Often the prep chemicals include a lot of sodium which knocks out the all-important potassium levels and that can cause Afib. If you have to do another, ask for the cleanout prep called Go-Lightly. Good advice, Shannon - The last paragraph, especially, can't be emphasized strongly enough. Hello Nick - just a comment on the copper intake. How much do you take daily? Do you also take supplemental zinc to help offset the copper? Copper is typically not something one should use much of if at all. Copper is often included in eye health vitamins...but typically is offset by about 10 times as much zinc and the zinc needs to be in a highly-absorbable form.
