Sorry Sharon for your experience, but on the positive side, you handled it very well. As you say, you knew what to do and rode it out. Good job. You know, now, how easily the balance can be disturbed. Next time you do something similar, just remember to take along additional potassium capsules and take them regularly to keep out the sodium. Lynne - in addition to the potential caffeine has to trigger an event in some people who are sensitive, there is the issue of sugar in the chocolate product. Were you just to consume unsweetened chocolate, the issue of hypoglycemia after eating sugar may not come into play as a trigger, but we know that sugar calls for insulin response and this calls for potassium and the whole thing can snowbaby Jackie - AFIBBERS FORUM
Kerry - a good deal of the stroke risk factor is based on blood viscosity. The thicker the blood, the easier it is to clot. If fibrinogen levels are high, the clotting risk is obviously greater. Silent inflammation plays a huge role in blood viscosity. Homocysteine is also a measurement of inflammation. Madelaine - you ask a good question. When I was under the care of cardiologists at Cleveland Clinic (CCF), the rule was to go to the ER before 48 hours was up even if you were on Coumadin. They liked the patient to call in at the 24-hour mark and give them a heads up in case they needed to schedule you in for cardioversion before the bewitching hour of #48. Blair - there definitely is a connection between inflammation and afib. Have your doctors measured your high sensitivity C-reactive Protein? If not, ask to have that ordered. In addition to the wise dietary restrictions, you may find it helpful to include some supplements that are also anti-inflammatory. Homocysteine is also a marker for the inflammatory process so it would be good to includeby Jackie - AFIBBERS FORUM
Larry - I guess I'm a bit perplexed. If you take a PPI because of stomach irritation, why would you then take aspirin which is a known stomach irritant? If you have a history of bleeding with aspirin, make sure you are fully aware of the dangers of aspirin with this condition. Not only in the stomach but the GI tract as well. Mimi and Blair - It does take a considerable amount of time after ablation for the heart to heal and calm down. After all, consider that the ablation procedure burns many little strips or lines on the heart chamber walls. This is a fair amount of trauma. Consider that if you burned your hand in this manner, you wouldn't want to be moving it much and your heart gets no such break - it haby Jackie - AFIBBERS FORUM
Scott - Welcome - I certainly agree and repeat again, remember, afib isn't fatal. It just feels as if it 'could' be at any moment. The initial anxiety we feel isn't imagined. My thought has always been that if the doctors we see could experience a few days or a week of afib, they would view us in an entirely different light because the sensations are certainly unlike anythinby Jackie - AFIBBERS FORUM

Julia - Calcium.... too much intake for only 500 mg. magnesium. Calcium is excitatory to cells, especially heart cells, and many afibbers find supplemental calcium makes afib worse. Vitamin D should be in the cholecalciferol form (D3) Take no compound that lists asparate as one of the ligands of the mineral...I see you have that in both the calcium and magnesium. Probably the most important thing to remember is that afib isn't fatal. It's really uncomfortable, annoying, inconvenient, and often downright terrifying but we don't die from it. Once you come to grips with that and learn to recognize the pattern you'll have to endure, it can get easier. Laura, you certainly can get the FliteTabs. We've discussed it in the past. It won't interfere with your medications. The advantage to the FliteTabs is the addition of pycnogenol which provides bioflavonoids along with the nattokinase enzyme. I was browsing papanature/iherb's web site on magnesium and was checking out the various brand of magnesium - noting that some were bound to the asparate ligand which is a no no for afibbers.... and I located another brand without bioperene that may be useful. Many are produced from hydrolyzed vegetable protein and create the free glutamate substance that is troublesome to those sensitive to glutamates. At the time of my procedure, the CCF was putting ablation patients on a couple months dose of Lipitor to help with healing and reduce inflammation by reducing oxidized LDL.
