Will I accept entirely with what you say about strenuous exercise and its effect on the heart - so many people, when they first post here, tell us that they exercise intensely for long periods, anecdotal I know, but it happens often. I should have described my aqua-aerobics as 'vigorous' rather than strenuous. It is one hour session on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, leaves me tireby Gill - AFIBBERS FORUM
Debbie I had highly symptomatic AF 24 hours a day for 18 months after many years of paroxysmal. I had an ablation, followed three days later by a touch up, by Professor Haissaguerre in Bordeaux six years ago. Since then I have had no AF and I can eat and drink whatever I like. I have found nothing that triggers AF. I do three hours of strenuous aqua-aerobics each week with no ill effects.by Gill - AFIBBERS FORUM
Kjell Years of highly symptomatic paroxysmal AF, then 18 months of 24/7 AF. Ablation in Bordeaux in January 2003, then a second one three days later because of recurrence. NSR since then, over 5 years now. I do get a lot of ectopics but if I take magnesium, potassium and taurine I hardly notice them. The ablations gave me back my life after years of total misery. Diana My latest holter showed 8000 ectopics in 24 hours, and the number has increased every year since my successful ablation in 2003. Professor Haissaguerre in Bordeaux, who did the ablation, told me to forget about them because they are harmless. But they used to be very uncomfortable. Since I started taking magnesium, potassium and taurine, as Hans suggests, I hardly feel them at all so Iby Gill - AFIBBERS FORUM
Fixit I had continuous AF for 18 months then went to Bordeaux in January 2003 for ablation. At that time very few people in UK were doing ablations, and Bordeaux was one of the best places in the world to have it done. Afib recurred three days after the first ablation. Prof. Haissaguerre said that it might well have stopped by itself but because I had travelled so far he did another ablationby Gill - AFIBBERS FORUM
Mike In September 2002 when I had my first consultation with Pr. Haisaguerre he suggested that I obtained form E112 and applied to my local Health Authority (now PCT?) who might fund it. At that time hardly any ablations were being done in the UK. I was desperate to have the ablation done as soon as possible and decided that I couldn't tolerate any delay caused by applying for funding, soby Gill - AFIBBERS FORUM
Sally I would strongly second Hans's suggestion about a consultation in Bordeaux. You can fly from London Gatwick in 1½ hours, very much quicker and aften cheaper than the train. I did this in 2002 and the consultation was a fraction of the cost for a private consultation in UK. I went on to have an ablation by Pr. Haissaguerre in January 2003 and have been in sinus rhythm ever since. The Boby Gill - AFIBBERS FORUM
Glen I do get huge numbers of ectopic beats - almost 6000 in 24 hours. The EPs told me to forget about them but they were so uncomfortable that I was thinking of going back to Bordeaux to see if there was anything more they could do. But then I tried taking magnesium, potassium and taurine. Although they are still happening I can hardly feel them at all, so I ignore them and just get on withby Gill - AFIBBERS FORUM
I had my ablation in Bordeaux in January 2003 so am coming up to 6 years of nsr with no complications. When I ask my EP about the long term prospects he says "You ARE the long term". Gillby Gill - AFIBBERS FORUM
Margaret So glad to hear that you have joined the Bordeaux Bunch! Hope your NSR lasts as long as mine has - coming up for 6 years in January. Do keep us posted on your progress. Gillby Gill - AFIBBERS FORUM

Blue Skies I had it done in January 2003 in Bordeaux by Professor Haissaguerre, assisted by Dr Jais. At that time only two people in UK were doing ablations and they had very little experience, so after much research I chose Bordeaux, who invented the procedure and had done many of them. After 3 days AF recurred and they immediately did a second ablation. Since then I have been in nsr thoughby Gill - AFIBBERS FORUM
Toni. Thanks for your reply. I had my ablation in Bordeaux and have already suggested that as a possibility, but my friend wanted to explore what, if anything, was available in South Africa first. He has a cardiologist there whom he trusts, but it is hard to convince him that what he needs is an EP, since he had never heard of them. I have suggested that he should buy Hans's first book aby Gill - AFIBBERS FORUM
Janet I am very lucky because my GP and I have a very good relationship, and we work together - she gives me all the information but lets me make the final decision on treatment unless she thinks it would be harmful. In the practice there are 6 GPs and I choose the see this one because she is so open-minded. James I think it depends on what you mean by 'cure'. Two points of view:- 1 I have been in sinus rhythm for 5½ years since my ablation in Bordeaux - feels to me as though I'm cured. 2 The lines of scars inside the heart prevent AF from happening now, but whatever caused it in the first place is, I assume, still there. You choose whether that's a cure or not. Gillby Gill - AFIBBERS FORUM
Barry I found your account fascinating, thank you for writing in such detail. After many years of paroxysmal AF and 18 months of continuous AF I had an ablation done by Prof. Haissaguerre in January 2003, followed by a touch-up three days later because of recurrence. Jamie Dr Cooklin at St Thomas's hospital does ablations, as does Dr Murgatroyd at King's College hospital. When I last spoke to Dr Murgatroyd about 18 months ago he told me that he had spent 6 months in Bordeaux and had done about 60 ablations. At that time, he said, Dr Cooklin had done 6. Paul I had my ablation in Bordeaux in January 2003. Professor Haissaguerre's report to my EP in London said -- "All 4 pulmonary veins have been cauterised after transeptal catheterization resulting in electrical disconnection from the left atrium. Real I had 3 cardioversions for persistent afib. First one was external, worked for 36 hours with flecainide. Second one, also external, with higher dose of flecainide, didn't work at all even with 3 attempts with increasing power. Third one was internal, worked for 40 hours. I eventually went to Bordeaux and had successful ablation almost 5 years ago. Gillby Gill - AFIBBERS FORUM
Margaret My EP at King's (Dr Cooklin) did the referral for me to go to Bordeaux even though at the time (2002) he didn't recommend it. There were no hard feelings at all, and when I came back fixed he just kept saying 'Spectacular, spectacular'. Margaret My ablation was done by Professor Haissaguerre. It cost me an extra 3000 euros to have him do it himself rather than a member of the team, but I thought it was worth it. I later discovered that Professor Jais is equally good, they work together as a team. My AF was continuous and highly symptomatic and life was not worth living. Ritze Two of the best people in the world at doing ablations are Professor Michel Haissaguerre and Dr Pierre Jais, who work at the Hopital Cardiologique du Haut Leveque, part of the Bordeaux University Hospitals Group in France. Peter I would suggest that you need an electrophysiologist rather than a cardiologist. The cardiologist at my local hospital (Bromley, Kent) referred me to the electrophysiologist at King's College hospital in London who was then Dr Cooklin, (who has since moved to Guy's/St Thomas's). At my request he referred me to Prof. Haissaguerre in Bordeaux where I had a successful ablation 4½ years ago.by Gill - AFIBBERS FORUM
Keith After years of paroxysmal AF then 18 months of persistent AF, I had an ablation in Bordeaux in January 2003. Paul >>I have paid at least 30K towards these ablations myself.<< You could have gone to Bordeaux for much less than that, and perhaps had fewer ablations.
